Hip Reconstruction and Hip Scope Physio
Over the past few years, arthroscopy of the hip joint is becoming more common as a technique in both the diagnosis and treatment of hip pain. A frequent cause of hip and groin pain is a tear of the acetabular labrum or FAI femoral acetabular impingement. Hip arthroscopy using keyhole surgery is used to correct this.
Rob Naish has had a strong interest in hip joint rehabilitation for many years. Having had hip labrum problems himself as well as hernias and groin muscle surgical release on both sides at different times he has written programs to improve his own hip strength to fully return to soccer and written programs from hip replacement to hip labral repairs for many clients.
Pre & Post Surgery
Before having a surgical scope a Pre-Operative appointment is highly recommend to get a head start on your mobility and learn the hip strength exercises. On average, it takes approximately 12-16 weeks for the initial recovery following hip arthroscopic surgery, though this is variable depending on the exact nature of your hip joint status and the exact surgery performed. It can take 3-12 months to be fully recovered.
Hip specific physiotherapy rehabilitation focuses on the deep gluteal muscle strength, hip joint capsule mobility, proprioception/balance, core endurance and hip flexor muscle length.
There are many types of hip surgery ( see below) and all require very different rehab protocols. Using a hip replacement program for a labral repair can make your operation worse. You will need effective and safe physiotherapy that is specific to your hip injury. We have a strong relationship with hip specialists and regularly meet to go over new protocols and watch new surgical procedures that enables us to fine tune our rehab.
